Gordhan - Manuel could head IMF
Pravin Gordhan says discussions with BRICs colleagues have started after Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s arrest on sex charges. South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has indicated Trevor Manuel could lead the International Monetary Fund as its present head awaits trial on numerous sex charges in the US. In a statement today Gordhan said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should choose a Managing Director from a developing country. "Such a candidate will bring a new perspective that will ensure that the interests of all countries, both developed and developing, are fully reflected in the operations and policies of the IMF," Gordhan said in a statement on Wednesday.
Bloomberg reports that Gordhan confirmed that Trevor Manuel could make an ideal candidate for the job. Yesterday Fin24 reported that National Planning Commission head Trevor Manuel could emerge as a candidate to replace International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn. He added that there are several credible and suitable candidates the IMF can choose from. Gordhan says the global financial crisis highlights the need for credible and representative institutions of global governance. "The sea change in the global economy, whereby world growth is being driven by emerging markets, further supports this call for more representative institutions of global governance," he said.
For this reason he says the IMF would be the perfect institution to do this. "The IMF is responsible for assessing policies, economic outlooks and risks in its 187 member countries as well as globally. Such surveillance is crucial to the smooth functioning of the international monetary system, which regulates how international payments are handled and makes possible the global exchange of goods and services.," Gordhan added. This announcement comes after current IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested on Saturday and formally charged in New York on Monday with seven counts involving sexual assault and attempted rape of a maid in the luxury Times Square Sofitel hotel. A judge denied him bail and he was remanded to the sprawling Rikers Island prison.Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer says he denies all the charges.
