Prime Minister Abe congratulated Prime Minister Tariceanu on Romania’s accession into the European Union (EU) in January this year and said, "I would like to further enhance our relations with Romania as a partner that shares fundamental values with Japan and cooperate with each other to address international issues." Prime Minister Tariceanu in response expressed his gratitude for Japan’s economic cooperation with Romania and indicated his hopes that Japanese companies would increase their investment into Romania to help further enhance the bilateral economic ties.
Prime Minister Abe furthermore asked for Romania’s support for the realization of the United Nations (UN) Security Council reform and for international coordination toward resolving North Korea’s abduction issue. Prime Minister Tariceanu said that it would be logical and fair for Japan to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. He further said that as another country facing the North Korean abduction issue, Romania pledged to offer Japan unconditional cooperation in political and technological terms toward the resolution of this issue.
