The 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit of the Heads of States and Government has ended here with the adoption of three declarations which re-affirm the movement’s resolve to address challenges facing member countries.
The declarations are the Sharm El-Sheikh Declaration, a special declaration on Nelson Mandela International Day and a special declaration on the ending of the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba.
The Heads of states and governments from the 118 member countries who gathered for the two-day summit, which ended Thursday, re-affirmed their position on the need to reform the United Nations, disarmarment and international security and the reform of the international economic and financial systems and architecture.
Zambian Vice-President George Kunda represented President Rupiah Banda at the summit whose theme was "International Solidarity for Peace and Development".
According to the declaration of the summit, the leaders committed themselves to work in co-ordination with the Group of 77 and China to achieve the fundamental reform of the international economic and financial system.
They further pledged to enhance the voice and participation of developing countries in international economic and decision-making and norm-setting, including in international financial institutions.
Regarding the reform of the UN, the movement commitment itself to restoring the balance between the principal organ of the United Nations and reaffirmed the role and authority of the General Assembly.
The leaders also pledged to shape a comprehensive UN energy agenda, including the creation of an effective mechanism to transfer advanced energy technologies to developing countries and countries with economies in transition with the aim of achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals and dealing effectively with the challenges of climate change.
As for the Mandela International Day declaration, the leaders recognized Mandela’s leading role in support for Africa’s struggle for liberation, self determination and Africa’s unity. They commended the former South Africa president for his values and dedication to the service of humanity, conflict resolution, race relations, promotion and protection of human rights and reconciliation among others.
Referring to the embargo on Cuba, the leaders urged the US to lift the embargo which has been in force for the past 50 years. They stressed that people should not be deprived of their own means of subsistence and development.
Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Permanent Secretary Tens Kapoma told ZANIS that the NAM leaders had implored member countries to diversify their economies so as to survive the effects of the fall in commodity prices.
He added that countries were also advised to work towards the adaptation of the protocol on climate change. Zambia, he said, was hopeful that the forthcoming conference on climate change to be held in Denmark would come up with measures on how to reduce the impact of climate change.
In his closing remarks, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who has taken over as Chair of NAM for the next three years, urged member countries to work together and follow up on its decision and outcomes.
"We must endeavour with determination and fortitude and the political will of the leaders of the movement in order to take our vision to our partners outside the movement to the various forums," he stated.
Earlier, Swaziland’s King Mswati, in his remarks, urged member countries to come up with common structures to make it easy for co-operating partners to support the region’s efforts. The Swazi leader, who represented the Africa region, also implored member countries to work tireless in boosting their economies.
He condemned the takeover of governments through coups, which he said was undermining development of the region. The summit - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt , july 17 (NNN-ZANIS)
