The delegation consisted of Dr. Marko Pavliha, M.P., Vice-President of the National Assembly, Mr. Jožef Jerovšek, M.P. and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr. Miro Petek, M.P. and Vice-Chairman of the Commission for Relations with Slovenes in Neighbouring and Other Countries and Ms Barbara Susnik, Chargé d’Affaires of the slovenian embassy in Canada.
France Cukjati arrived on saturday, Nov. 4 to Toronto where he met the dynamic Slovenian community.
On nov. 6 , President France Cukjati and delegation started visits in Ottawa and called on Hon. Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons, the Speaker of the Senate Hon. Noel Kinsella, with Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Peter Van Loan, MP, with Canada - Europe Parliamentary Association, chaired by Hon. Lorna Milne, and with the Chair of the Steering Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, Kevin Sorenson.
They also met with the representative of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, in Toronto, on tuesday and left Canada on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the evening.
Canada has traditionally excellent relations with Slovenia and cooperate closely especially in the multilateral area. Diplomatic relations with the country were established since 1993, after recognition of Slovenia’s independence in January 1992. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Hon. Peter Milliken made a friendly visit to Slovenia in september 2005.
In regional affairs, as a full member of the European Union, since 2004, the country will adopt Euro as of January 1, 2007.
