More than 100 journalists across Africa have benefited from NEPAD’s “train the trainer” programme, through which selected journalists are provided with skills and techniques to use in training their colleagues.
The latest group of trainers — broadcast journalists from English-speaking West African countries — began a 10-day training workshop in Accra, Ghana on 8 April 2008 which will also enhance their understanding of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development.
The 12 West African journalists from Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia are attending the Accra seminar as part of the communication strategy of the NEPAD Secretariat and supported by the German Technical Co-operation Agency (GTZ), to create more public awareness about the programmes and objectives of NEPAD.
The opening ceremony for the fourth workshop in the training programme was well attended by private and public radio, television and print media journalists in Accra, a demonstration of the interest journalists attach to the NEPAD programme across Africa.
The three-man NEPAD delegation to the Accra workshop was led by Louis Napo Gnagbẻ, Media Manager, NEPAD Secretariat. The other members of the delegation were Mrs Sina Eckhof, of the German Technical Cooperation Agency and Daniel Danof of the Deutsch Welle Academy.
Opening the workshop Mr. Napo Gnagbé, said it was vitally important for journalists to understand the objectives and direction of NEPAD because they played a crucial role in the dissemination of information to the public.
He said the seminar also encouraged the participants to build networks through which to exchange and share knowledge on NEPAD.
The NEPAD Secretariat, he said, was developing a database of journalists on the continent to encourage exchange of ideas on the initiative.
Darvail Danoo, the seminar facilitator, said the training programme was carefully structured to ensure that participants would be able to pass on their knowledge to their colleagues by utilising the latest teaching methods.
The first “train the trainer” seminar was held in South Africa in 2006 for Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. The second took place in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, directed at French-speaking countries and the third was in Arusha, Tanzania, for countries in East Africa.
Vital element in good governance Ronnie Ojwang, research officer at the NEPAD Kenya Secretariat, reports that the Arusha workshop, from 16-20 March 2008, was sponsored by CIDA-Canada and the NEPAD Kenya Secretariat and brought together top media practioners from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somaliland.
In opening the workshop, the convener and programme manager, Jerry Okungu, encouraged the journalists to focus more on the need for strong institutions in Africa and not on powerful individuals, since institutions last longer and are also more sustainable in the long term.
African journalists need to be involved in calling for the building of strong and credible institutions in the continent, he said. This could be only achieved if journalists go the extra mile in addressing good governance principles through strengthened institutions in Africa.
The CIDA-Canada representative, Alice Birnbaum, emphasised the need for gender issues to go far beyond the numbers of women represented in workshops ; to a holistic effort to integrate women into the structures and systems of governance in the continent.
The keynote address was presented by Roland Amoussouga, the spokesperson and senior legal advisor to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
He said the media formed an important organ of civil society, especially in combating societal evils such as genocide, crime against humanity, bad governance and corruption which thrived in conditions of secrecy.
“The media is a vital element of good governance and sustainable development in the African continent”, he said. Source : NEPAD, april 11, 2008
