Après les footballeurs Ronaldo (Brésil) et Zinedine Zidane (France), l’attaquant international ivoirien de Chelsea, Didier Drogba, agée de 28 ans, est nommé ambassadeur itinérant du Programme des Nations unies pour le développement (PNUD - ONU).
In his message of support, President Mbeki said : "It is with a sense of great sadness and shock that we have learnt of the passing away of His Highness, King Malietoa Tanumafili II on Friday, 11 May 2007 "Despite this sad loss to the Samoan nation and people, the King will be long remembered for his passionate and committed service to Samoa and the broader Pacific Islands region.
It is a testimony to his astute leadership that for the past 15 years Samoa has stood as a beacon of hope, stability and progress in the Pacific. We therefore applaud the achievements of the King for having been a powerful and resonating voice for democracy and good governance as well as in articulating the development challenges unique to small developing Island States," continued President Mbeki.
"Our thoughts and prayers will be with you, as leaders and people the world over join the people of Samoa in mourning the loss of an inspirational leader, richly imbued with great warmth, kindness and generosity of spirit," said President Mbeki.
"On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of South Africa, please extend our sincere condolences to the government and people of Samoa and particularly the family of the King, at the tragic loss of an outstanding Samoan and admired regional Statesman," concluded President Mbeki.
