Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he is satisfied with the progress South Africa has made towards preparing for the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 Fifa World Cup™.
Blatter rounded off his four-day courtesy visit to South Africa with a media briefing at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The stadium will host the opening and closing matches of the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup. “The 2010 World Cup will be a great, great success,” Blatter said.
Flanked by Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa, Local Organising Committee Chairman Irvin Khoza and Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Amos Masondo, the Fifa president told journalists gathered here that every time he is in South Africa he feels like dancing.
The 72-year-old Swiss moved to the side of the stage and danced, saying each time he is in the country he feels a rhythm that prompts his to dance.
“Life is rhythm, football is rhythm and I feel it when I am here. You know in Zurich we are in the German part of Switzerland and it is boring, boring, boring,” he said.
Johannesburg Mayor Masondo said the city would be ready to welcome visitors in 2009 and 2010.
“We are making real progress with our stadiums. I want to assure Fifa president Blatter that our stadiums will be ready on time,” he said.
Gauteng Premier Shilowa reiterated the mayor’s sentiment saying he was confident that all 2010 deliverables were well on track.
“As a province we are satisfied that both in Tshwane and in Johannesburg that on all of these stadiums we are on course.
“With regards to the important issue of public transport and road networks we are also on schedule to deliver the required infrastructure on time,” he said.
Blatter would later on Wednesday meet the president of the African National Congress Jacob Zuma before heading back to Switzerland. Source : Johannesburg, 18 September 2008
