The successful completion of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process in Ghana, Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa and Algeria has been well received at global, regional and national levels and has enhanced the growing confidence in Africa’s determination to entrench good governance in the spirit of NEPAD.
The successful roll out of the APRM process has also raised expectations on the implementation of the Country Action Plans emanating from the process.
A number of lessons have been learnt in general and in particular in the five Peer Reviewed countries and it is the intention of the NEPAD Secretariat to revisit issues relating to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) which have arisen from the process.
The Secretariat is now planning a technical workshop which will bring together the NEPAD CSO Think Tank and the APRM National Focal Points, NEPAD country structures, CSOs and gender networks that were involved in the APRM process in the five countries.
The workshop will explore ways in which CSO participation can be better managed and mainstreamed at the national level, and the CSO Think Tank will consider a draft tool on which the Secretariat is working to guide CSO engagement in the APRM process.
In addition, an open day is planned on the third day of the workshop to discuss the 2007 G8 and African Partnership Forum (APF) issues and to share information with a wider CSO group on the APF-G8 process.
The outcomes of the workshop will be presented at the November meeting of the APF in Algiers during the CSO Pre-Summit and will be made available to the national governments of the five countries. Source : NEPAD, 26 octobre 2007
