The African Peer Review was conceived through NEPAD in 2002 as an instrument for monitoring good governance on the continent to guide activities at both political and economic levels.

To date three pioneer countries - Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya — have completed the APRM base review process and as time progresses the APRM community of practitioners is fast developing a growing body of experiences. At the same time there are increasing and diverse needs of the newer practitioners to share the experiences of the pioneer countries.

The Abuja seminar aims to provide a highly interactive forum for discussion and exchange of technical and procedural experiences among the West African APRM acceding countries.

Nigeria has invited participants from Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone, as well as from each of the three pioneer countries and from South Africa, which is close to finalisation of the process.

The seminar is being supported by German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) which, on behalf of the German Government, is assisting NEPAD and the APRM structures in African countries to successfully accomplish the reviews.
