Paving the way for Food Summit

An international technical committee has been established in consultation with the Nigerian Government, the NEPAD Secretariat and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to prepare the agenda for the NEPAD Food Summit to be held in Abuja, Nigeria, later this year.

The objective of the Summit - to be devoted to food availability, accessibility and affordability — will be to review progress in the implementation of the 1996 World Food Summit as well as the 2003 Maputo Declaration for a 10% government budgetary allocation to agriculture by African countries to achieve food security for all.

The first meeting of the technical committee took place on 26 July 2006 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was hosted by the NEPAD Secretariat. The next meeting has been scheduled to take place in October in Rome.
